Hatch Sound Machine:
A Nursery Sound & Distance Model

AI-assisted synthesis & research analysis · AI & Editorial Policy

Use a measured sound level and source-to-crib distance to estimate how sound falls across open space, then compare the device details that matter to your room.

01 / WHAT THE CALCULATOR DOES

Estimate, then measure.

The calculator applies the inverse-square relationship for sound spreading through open space: L₂ = L₁ − 20 log₁₀(d₂ / d₁). With the example inputs of 65 dBA at 50 cm and a crib position 200 cm away, the estimate is 52.96 dBA.

That number is a simplified estimate. It assumes the source behaves like a point source in a free field. Walls, floor and ceiling reflections, furniture, device direction, and how the original measurement was made can change the level in an actual room.

02 / PRODUCT DETAILS

Choose for your room and routine.

Compare physical controls, portability, power backup, timer behavior, and the manufacturer’s measured output at a stated distance. The research catalog contains example device specifications; confirm the model and current details with the maker before purchasing.

03 / SOUND AROUND SLEEP

An estimate is not a safety assessment.

This calculator shows how a measured sound level changes under a simplified open-space model. It does not determine an appropriate volume, a safe exposure duration, or suitable placement for an individual infant.

Follow your sound machine’s instructions and ask a qualified clinician about a specific concern. Real rooms have reflections and obstructions that the formula cannot model.

04 / PRIMARY SOURCES

Check the original research.

The American Academy of Pediatrics published a study measuring sound levels from infant sleep machines. It is historical research, not a personalized placement rule or a calculator-derived safety threshold.

The nursery sound tool estimates open-space sound attenuation from a measured level and two distances. It does not account for room reflections, device direction, exposure duration, or an individual child’s needs. It is not a safety assessment.
